The SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is the world’s smallest and lightest ultra-wide- angle zoom lens for APS-C cameras, covering an effective focal range of 15-27mm (35mm equivalent). With ultra-sharp optics, a bright F2.8 aperture and a newly developed push-on petal type lens hood, photographers can create expressive images anytime, anywhere.

The lens features a unique aspherical element that reduces the overall size of the lens and enhances image quality. An 11.6cm (1:4) minimum focusing distance produces unique compositions, with expansive backgrounds and pleasing bokeh. With a weight of only 260g, a fast AF stepping motor and minimal focus breathing, the lens can be easily mounted onto a small gimbal to create impressive video content for social media use and professional projects.

Features and build

The external barrel of the 10-18mm F2.8 is constructed using a polymer called Thermally Stable Composite (TSC). This has a similar thermal expansion rate to aluminium, meaning that the metal interior of the lens and the TSC exterior behave in the same way as temperatures change. TSC is also light and strong, and has a sleek finish.

The lens has an internal focus mechanism, so the lens always remains the same length when the subject distance changes. This makes it well suited to gimbal use due to a relatively constant centre of gravity, and it also means the end of the lens doesn’t rotate when focusing – important when using filters.

The lens has a stepping motor that delivers smooth, fast and accurate AF for both stills and video. It has been designed with lighter glass elements in the focus lens group, which ensures responsive autofocus that is fully compatible with all the latest AF camera technology.

The durable brass mount is surrounded by a rubber seal to help keep out dust and moisture.

Ultra-sharp optics

Despite being extremely small and light at under 300g, the 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | C delivers outstanding optical quality at all aperture settings. Optical performance is maintained across the whole frame, meaning fine detail is rendered perfectly right into the corners.

The lens has an advanced optical design made up of 13 elements in 10 groups, including 4 aspherical elements, 1 SLD element and 3 FLD elements. These ensure razor-sharp results and work with in-camera digital corrections to eliminate chromatic aberration, flare, distortion and vignetting.

The lens has Super Multi-Layer Coatings to reduce flare and ghosting when working in bright direct sunlight – especially important at the wider end of the zoom range.

Close-up capability

The 10-18mm has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4, giving it a minimum working distance (sensor to the front of the lens) of just 11.6cm. This makes it well-suited to close-up photography, including food, insects, flowers and other macro-type subjects.

Distortion control

Using a combination of optical correction and in-camera digital correction, lens distortion is virtually eliminated across the whole zoom range, ensuring straight lines, such as the horizon or the sides of tall buildings, remain perfectly straight.

Ideal companion lenses

Collectively weighing less than 600g, the 10-18mm and 18-50mm are an ideal lens set for wide-angle photographers, as giving an unbroken focal range of 10-50mm with a constant F2.8 aperture. Both have superb optical quality at all apertures, and deliver very consistent bokeh, character and colour rendition – important to maintain a uniform look across a whole body of work.
